Great movie, great cast.reat setting.
Absolutely loved the movie. Not your usual movie crap, which makes it so appealing. Great cast, of course, and an intriguing story.
Bleak & pure.... its not all about glamour....
I love this film and it made want to come and live in Newfoundland. I love the human story, the scenery in which it takes place, the sense of community. Francis T.
Loved the book so much I was afraid the movie would be a huge let-down, but it really wasn`t. The plot has some interesting variations from Proulx`s original, but the actors, director and film crew did an excellent job of capturing the essence and charm of this small town in Newfoundland with its eccentric characters. Kevin Spacey was awesome, as always.
I adored that film because of its story and location.
it was an incredibly moving film that stirred the depth of my spirit and reminded me of how simple life/living can be extremely rewarding. infact, i felt rather propelled to revisit newfoundland once again. this film is a timeless classic! i loved the naturalness of the performers and the directors sensibilities.
Just watched this movie again. I think Lasse Hallstrom did a wonderful job! I hope he makes another movie set in Newfoundland. Dame Judi Dench is always terrific! As is Gordon Pinsent and Pete Postlethwaite. I love when Pete comes to Canada, but I hate when he is the bad guy! Pete...please come back, but do something like Among Giants...will ya. :o)
brillant movie
Absolutly Fabulous
More producers should take advantage of world class scenery...
Fantastic!
scenery was amazing and they played great big sea songs the greatest band in the world!!! Newfoundland Rawks!!!
I am a Newfoundlander so I really enjoyed this movie. Though the accents were not the best I think that everything else was great. The scenery was beautiful.
the accents were not the best, julianna moore`s was by far the best
The scenery was spectacular and the ocean scenes very realistic: however one could only spend 15-20 min. in the water before hypothermia would set in. Acting wonderful.
accents could have been more realistic other then that it was a good movie
Great change of pace from the `usual` movies. Good look at loss and at redemption
It was an wonderfull film. Lasse hallström have done a verry good job with this film. I`m only 17 but I loved it. But my dad didn`t enoyed it as much as I did. I really want to visit Newfoundland I think it could be really nice to leave Sweden for a while, dont you ?? And Juliane was great., ///Hanna soon a Newfoundlander
Moving film about the healing of a broken heart
I was expecting more scenery than what was shown.
Fantastic characters and relationships, and I say that without having read the novel, which I will. The real merit here is to have been able to translate into a visual language what shows through as a wonderful and complex book.
Loved it, Besides the big name hollywood stars, the lesser known actors really made the movie work. All gave a splendid performance that makes me wish hollywood market these type of movies more often...
This had to be the greatest movie, made on newfoundland. It was funny and very true in nature.
KEVIN SPACEY WAS ENTIRELY MISCAST AND RUINED THE FILM. BLANCHETT WAS SPECTACULAR!!! IS THERE NOTHING THIS WOMAN CANNOT DO REGARDING FILM ROLES? SPACEY WAS SO GOONY IN THAT ANESTHETIZED PORTRAYAL AND THAT GOONY HAT THAT HE JUST DISTRACTED ME IN EVERY ONE OF HIS SCENES. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN ED HARRIS OR JEFF BRIDGES OR SOMEONE WHO COULD MAKE US EMPATHIZE WITH HIM. AND THAT HAIR DYE THING...EVERYONE ELSE IN THE FILM WAS SO GREAT, INCLUDING DAME JUDY AND SCOTT GLENN...WHAT A SHAME...THE SCENERY WAS SO BEAUTIFULLY SHOT AND SO MUCH A CHARACTER IN THE FILM...
I `recognised` the settings from the book!!!
Both the book and the movie are boring and uneventful, very bad...
I found the performance by Kevin Spacey and Judi Dench mesmerizing. Cate Blanchette showed another side of her acting ability. I believe all three actors to have a great deal of talent. It was funny to hear Julianne Moore try to speak like a Newfie... in fact, it was more disturbing than funny.... I was very happy to see Newfoundland protrayed in both the harshest elements (climate and emotions) as well as the feel of a loving community. Being from Newfoundland, and having to leave for employment reasons (same story as many other Newfoundlanders sad to say) I miss the Island, even after 25 years. This year I return with my youngest ch
Excellent film
Julianne Moore is A sweetheart and should get an Oscar for making this flick work. And it it does work!
Good Flick
Wonderful Movie. I really enjoyed it. It brought back some fond memories of living in NFLD as a kid, especially the kite making and flying. I remembered making my own kite, a great memory. Superb job.
Great movie
I think Roger Ebert was too generous in giving this movie two stars. This movie made Newfoundlanders look like a bunch of odd-balls who are trying to find themselves and never do.
I loved it. In the beginning it seemed a little bit weird but in the end I wanted to see it all over again. The actors fitted in their roles.
Besides the music...I din`t like the movie at all.
i enjoyed every momement ! brilliant music and scenery
This is the first film I have ever wanted to see again. I agree whole heartedly with this other (more literate than me) veiwer who said.............."In this blow `em up, shoot `em up, killing humans world of hollywood entertainment comes a gentle breeze of a film about real people just trying to get along in a remotely beautiful place. What a lovely film. AB"
I heard so many stories about how wonderful Kevin Spacey thought Newfoundlanders were. Too bad it wasn`t portrayed in the movie. It never fails.
There is so much more to Newfoundland than fishing villages and paint chipping of houses. I hope that anyone wathching this movie do not think all Newfoundlanders are that messed up. A very disappointing movie. Wasn`t worth the price of the ticket.
