i expected much more
not a good movie
In this blow `em up, shoot `em up, killing humans world of hollywood entertainment comes a gentle breeze of a film about real people just trying to get along in a remotely beautiful place. What a lovely film. AB
wonderful locations....nice acting my kevin spacey...and nice direction
Loved every minute of it. This is what real movies should be.
Was only a glance of what it could have been. "The Rock" is much more than what was shown. "Lord-Tunderin`-By". Amongst other discrepencies, the actors did not quite have the Newfie accent.
was a movie that the actors and caricatures made it all the more worth while to see.c
Really enjoyed it!Loved seeing the Trinity area again. Looking forward to visiting the area again this summer.
Great cinematography!!
**yawn** Maybe Spacey should have put the same gusto into this movie as he did giving Couric & Alman the finger (actually, with both hands) when he lost the award at this past Globes. Sore loser?? Just proves Miramax can`t buy an award.. 45 million to make a movie being shown in 450 theaters. sad
Unbelievable movie. Actors where fantastic. I thought Kevin Spacey was so believable in this movie. I truly got into the emotions of the character (no one does it as well as Mr. Spacey). The scenery was one of the most beautiful I`ve seen in any movie. It makes you want to go there even if you hate cold weather. I would recommend this movie..
I personally didn`t like the book at all. The movie was a wonderful story that touched me. Kevin was the perfect Quolye with such kindness of spirit.
My husband and I really enjoyed this gem of a movie!Wonderful to watch and worth the twenty-three dollars.
Fine entertainment, but not everyone on the Rock is Gordon Pinsent.
Gorgeous
Kevin Spacey, the "ordinary" man fulfills this role completely. He is neither handsome nor sexy...simply ordinary, like most of us. His ability to complement the notion of everyman is what makes this film so successful. Annie Proulx`s magnificent story and the producer`s ability to recognize it, makes this an Oscar potential film.
Reading the others responses to this film, i was sort of skeptical. So i went to see it to decide for myself. I will sum it up for you "chick flick for the elderly" and there is nothing wrong with that! So for the younger crowd which is myself included, stay home so the appropriate crowd can enjoy the film in silence.
This movie was just beautiful to watch. They also did a great job with the Newfoundland accents. Super story as well.
Excellent movie. As a Newfoundlander I found it very realistic.
Just wonderful. Spacey deserves an Oscar nod.
"It`s a subtly inspirational story, where we root for Quoyle, even though we`re not entirely sure why." -- Kim Morgan, OREGONIAN
"A movie that engrosses, hypnotizes and clings to the memory long after the final frame." -- Rex Reed, NEW YORK OBSERVER
While working on location in Newfoundland, Kevin Spacey took part in a number of local initiation ceremonies including kissing a fish and drinking Screech (a local brew). The locals later accepted him as an adopted Newfie.
Fabulous. I`m even going to say the unthinkable (for me!): I preferred it to the book.
I loved the book, and so I couldn`t wait for the movie. I saw it last night, and it was stunningly beautiful. I loved all the outside scenes the best, especially the old house, and the trip to Gaze Island, where Quoyle learned about his past ancestors. I only wish the director had put in the school concert, and the trip to the city. I think they were very important to the love story.
If you are 40+ years old and you are either a newfie or have some relatives who are, you will love this movie! I on the other hand am 24, half newfie and disliked this film :( sorry kids but i tried my best!
enjoyed more than the book
Fabulous acting! Extremely well cast!
I think it as fabulous and tells about Newfoundland as it was, a little over done but good.
Thought it was it was great. Movie that was needed to start the year 2002 a good warm note.It was so nice to see a Movie that didn`t need foul language or violence to get your attention.
I loved it! What could be better than a flick about dysfunctional newfies!
One of the few common man stories of the year, very well done by some of the biggest names in cinema today.
Fabulous movie.. highly recommended. Spacey, as always, is charming
Great movie about a Canadian small town and the way it can turn the human spirit..I don`t Americans taking to this as much as Canadians, especially Newfoundlanders (who aren`t to picky on how others make a feeble attempt to imitate their accent).
Superb. It hit all the right spots.
it sucks
Not bad at all - I was surprised it was so well done. It`s a good job considering the book is so rich and involved. Kevin Spacey, Gordon Pinsent, and Julianne Moore did very well.
A lovely little tale peppered with subtle performances by Julianne Moore and Kevin Spacey. Judi Dench is spot-on, and Cate Blanchett disappears into her role as Petal. The real star, of course, is Newfoundland. It is sweeping, majestic and grand. Well worth a look, b`y!
